South African study visa requirements

South African study visa requirements

International students are required to have appropriate cover from a registered South African medical scheme for the duration of their studies, according to the Visa Regulations in South Africa’s Immigration Act (Act No. 13 0f 2002).

Please note: The South Africa Department of Home Affairs has released Immigration Directive No. 05 of 2023 in April 2023, stating that a radiology report and chest x-ray is no longer a study VISA requirement. The medical report is still a requirement.

Please remember

Please remember

An international student’s medical cover does not start upon arrival in South Africa. The start date, which is linked to the period for which the student’s study visa has been issued, is indicated on the membership confirmation letter.

If a student’s study plans change, they need to advise the scheme of the change one month before the start date. Membership termination, or a change in the start date, unfortunately cannot be backdated if the scheme did not receive at least one month’s notification.

Medical aid contributions must be made directly to the scheme, and not through intermediaries. To minimise risk for all parties involved, cash payments cannot be accepted.

Contribution payment needs to be arranged prior to arrival in South Africa. Students benefiting from a sponsorship are strongly advised to notify their sponsor of the above requirements at the onset of the sponsorship.

The South African Study Visa is essential for foreigners who wish to pursue education in the country. It allows international students to study at recognised institutions, including primary, secondary, and tertiary schools. In addition to studying, this visa allows international students to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week during the academic term, offering valuable work experience.
