Study permit requirements and risks
For international students to register at a South African academic institution, it is compulsory to obtain a study permit for the duration of their studies. Many students join a medical scheme and only pay for one month’s medical aid cover to get a confirmation letter and then cancel or suspend their medical cover. Please check the confirmation letter handed in with the study permit application, there should always be a specific end date.
